Savoyard Piedmont formed the heart of the Duchy of Savoy, a domain that extended well beyond the Alps — to the shores of Lake Geneva in the north — and reached the sea to the south, encompassing the County of Nice. With the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the Dukes of Savoy obtained the title of King of Sicily, which they held until 1720, when — following a diplomatic exchange with the Bourbons — they acquired the Kingdom of Sardinia. That crown remained with the House of Savoy until the Unification of Italy in 1861.

Governing the Sardinian territories on behalf of the sovereign was the Viceroy: a figure invested with full powers and cloaked in the solemnity that his rank demanded. Among the most illustrious holders of that office was Angelo Maria Solaro della Moretta, a member of one of the branches of the noble Solaro family, who held the position from 1783 to 1789.

The Suite dei Viceré is conceived to evoke that institutional grandeur: bold lines, deep colours, a commanding presence that still bears the mark of decisions capable of moving the destiny of entire regions.
