Suite Solaro

The palazzo that imagined Italy

The name Solaro del Borgo belongs to the family that for generations was among the most influential in Piedmontese aristocracy. Cesare Saluzzo di Monesiglio, one of the founders of the Accademia Filarmonica who purchased the palazzo in 1838, was connected to this milieu of enlightened nobles who saw in culture — music, literature, political debate — the instrument for building a nation.

It was in these very rooms that in 1842 Camillo Benso di Cavour founded the Whist Club: not a simple gaming club, but the informal laboratory where Turin's liberal-moderate elite gathered to discuss, read foreign newspapers, and imagine the future of Piedmont. Here alliances were forged and the political moves that would lead to the Unification of Italy were prepared.

The bathtub, placed within the room and not concealed — displayed as an architectural element — transforms the ritual of bathing into a theatrical moment, worthy of the state apartments that Benedetto Alfieri designed for this palazzo in the eighteenth century.
